Loretta was born on November 4, 1937, in Passaic, New Jersey, the U.S. She is of Polish descent. Swit graduated from Pope Pius XII High School situated in Passaic. She further graduated from Katherine Gibbs School in Montclair. Later, she worked as a stenographer in Bloomfield.
While working as a stenographer, she studied drama with the American actor Gene Frankel, who was her acting coach, in Manhattan. Swit further trained at the American Academy of Dramatic Arts to enlist her name as a singer.
