Kathleen Doyle Bates was born in Memphis, a city in Tennessee, United States, on 28 June 1948. Her parents are Langdon Doyle Bates and Bertie Kathleen. Bates’s father, Langdon Doyle, was a mechanical engineer. However, Kathleen is the third daughter of three siblings. 

In 1965, Kathy graduated from White Station High School. Later, she studied theatre at the Southern Methodist University and became a member of the international PanHellenic sorority, Alpha Delta Pi.

After study theatre, Kathy Bates moved to New York to pursue an acting career. In 1971, she began her on-screen acting career playing a minor role in the film Taking Off. Then, she got a chance for the comedy-drama Vanities and soap opera The Doctors, All My Children, One Life to Live, and so on.
